Matthias has a degree in Oenology and Viticulture and over twenty-five years of experience in these fields. Following years spent in Switzerland, France and New Zealand, Matthias moved to Tasmania to start a winery and vineyard with his partner, Lauren. The winery is located on the western side of the beautiful Tamar Valley.

Utzinger Wines growing stems from a deep love for our planet, the creatures living on it and a common idea of true terroir wines. The approach emphasises on creating habitat for beneficial invertebrates and other native wildlife to create a balance between all elements found in our biosystem. The vineyard and winery are certified organic and ten percent of the property has been set aside to preserve intact native grass and an additional fifteen percent has been planted with native vegetation.
